Next week is full of possibility.

Still doing the Red project in the free time between life… Which is why it’ll probably be ready circa 2015.

Actually, that said, next week I a: take delivery of a shiny new Aluminium Macbook Pro (which is lovely and I can’t wait) and b: have more free time so will start setting about drawing Red in earnest. What I’m most interested in, because I have no idea so far, is how long a page takes top to tail. At the moment I fritter about with it in between things or when kids are in bed and paperwork is done and all that. So each page has taken about four days or so. But that’s four days of an hour here, an hour there. With 95 pages to go four days per page won’t cut it but one day each will… We’ll see.

Still waiting on Pixelmator 1.5 though. This project is stress testing Pixelmator 1.4 – a few crashes with the large file size plus layer list… But still the tool of choice for the project, as is Brushes which I’m trying to integrate in some way, just haven’t worked out exactly how yet…

Socks which have served me well…

So… as an ex-animator there are some parts of the industry that I still keep up with. Close to the top of the list would be the uniform, or at least one part of it, the wearing of socks with cartoon characters on. It’s a little known fact that animators try and suss out each others socks to see who’s wearing what, which character is most in vogue, that sort of thing*.

So, in the interests of historical documentation, probably only interesting to the person typing this, I thought I’d start an online repository of the socks that have served me well over the years.

((as an aside it always amazes me that people seem surprised that I walk to work. It’s a twenty minute walk each way and not an unpleasant journey going past the River Wey and over two bridges. There is a bus, yes, but I’d spend as long waiting for it and then travelling as I would walking to work so seems a no-brainer to me. It does wear the old shoes and socks out, but only over a period of time and the benefits seem a little more positive than saving a sock or two)).

Number one in an ongoing series, alongside a top ten chart of my favourite socks for complete accuracy and accountability, are:

Gromit! He’s been a faithful friend but the holes at the back of the heel are just not darnable any more. It’s time to say goodbye with only a nod here to look back on.

Top Ten of socks current are:

10: Dr Solomon’s virus killer socks. Not cartoon socks, that said, but the thought was there.
9: Stitch on black fabric.
8: Douglas the Lurpack butter man, yellow on blue with brown outlines.
7: Dark blue two tone Donald Duck on dark blue fabric.
6: Goofy – red character on grey fabric.
5: Fozzy Bear.
4: Alien from Toy Story.
3: Rainbow Goofy bought on sale from the Disney Shop this year. Very cool.
((so good in fact that I went back and bought two more pairs however, for the sake of fairness, they only get one slot in the chart. It’s better to take these things seriously)).
2: Grumpy the Dwarf saying ‘Do I look like a people person?’

and finally, in the coveted top slot.

1:  Pink Panther face on black fabric. Not the best sock in the drawer, nowadays, nor my favourite character but the socks are somewhat more grown up than some of the others and, subsequently, are the socks I wore when I got married and therefore only worn on special occasions. You see? A little slice of romanticism at the end just for people that were reading this and assuming I was completely mad.

Currently Watching: 24, Lost, Battlestar Galactica. Currently reading: Sylver 3 final draft.Currently listening to: Mayo and Kermode. Currently looking forward to: Franklyn, if I can get the chance to see it. I want to sit in the cinema with a notepad and write out all of the films it’s ripped off… Currently playing: Viva Pinata 2, Brain Training, Wii Fit.

*Slight exaggeration.

…one more thing…

…ooops, forgot to add this but will add it to this post thus distracting from all in the post prior, but hey ho: one more thing… ((you know how the apple fanboy always saves a cool thing for last with a white text on black slide?))

I add this with a mixture of fear and trepidation, as well as a little pride for reasons that will become apparent in a second.

I’m very lucky enough to be married to someone who is a talented artist and creative person. SHe always deflects this, because I can ‘draw’ in a more conventional sense she always dismisses her artworks as less useful or ‘arty’ but, as the picture’ll prove, wifey’s artwork is, often, far better than mone and certainly more popular 🙁 Hence the hesitation in mentioning it. The last time I big upped her work it proved so much more popular than the stuff I was doing I wanted to move to a tent in Wales and forget about it all 🙂

Anyhow: wifey has been getting more and more into sock characters (take a sock, make a character). (Hence name). She was into amigurumi (sp?) for a while but this seems to have taken over. Pix added show the skills and how cool they look.

They do look very groovy and are some of my favourite things 🙂 as is wifey herself. Now if I could just persuade her that she is an artist…

Hmmm maybe I should have added a sock character to the parcels/quote begging letters… Ah well, too late now.
